Plastic Bags: Chios in the footprints of Alonissos

The launching of a very important project, an initiative of the Municipality of Chios was marked by an event on August 17th, 2016 at Volissos central square. Thalassa Foundation was of course represented in order to relay its experience from the “Plastic Bag Free Alonissos Project” which the foundation funded and will shortly come to a successful end to be also marked with an Infoday in Piraeus on September 30th, 2016 (implemented by MOm/The Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal and the Mediterranean SOS Network, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Alonissos).

The Vice President of Thalassa Foundation Ms. Vera Alexandropoulou talked about the brilliant example of Alonissos and the need for local communities to take action for the protection of their precious environment. The event was attended by the Vice Mayor for the Environment and Culture, Ms. Vivi Polamoussi, the President of DIANOCH, Mr. Socrates Syriodis, The President of the Municipal District of Chios, Ms. Anna Chryssouli, the President of the Attica Federation of Chios Associations, Mr. Argyris Kokkinakis, the President of the Volissos Association of Attica, Mr. Michalis Economou and the writer Mr. Yannis Makridakis.

During the event the film titled The Panorama of Ecological Films travels in the Aegean Sea from the archives of ELLET (Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage) and the event was concluded with an open discussion and environmental games for children, while cotton bags bearing a print of Volissos and the Municipality’s logo were distributed.

The pilot project will be launched in the municipal district of Amani and will later be expanded to the rest of Chios, with the support of Thalassa Foundation, the Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage and the local cultural associations of Volissos and Parparia.
