Blue Islands Of Greece
Preserving unique marine habitats
Greece is a country with an extended coastline, surrounded by Sea (Ionian, Mediterranean, Aegean) hosting over 4.000 islands, the majority of which are small, yet of extremely high natural value. They constitute a driving force for the Greek economy, by attracting thousands of visitors every year who enjoy their beautiful landscapes and hospitality. Due to their commercial significance, the risk of their environmental degradation is serious. The aim of this initiative is to preserve their marine natural reserves and engage local communities in pursuing sustainable growth through conservation actions and the eventual adoption of a responsible attitude towards their natural environment. Our ambition is to create a group of Blue Islands that will set an example towards sustainable development and to enhance their natural and cultural heritage from an eco-friendly perspective at the same time.
