Mapping for Conservation

Dec 24, 2024 | Biodiversity Conservation, Marine Research

The Foundation supported the nationwide project Mapping for Conservation the main objective of which was the promotion of the conservation of the endangered Mediterranean monk seal at a national level through the identification of important pupping sites, the collaboration with local stakeholders and the inclusion of important pupping and resting sites in the Network of the marine Natura 2000 network in Greece. The project was implemented my MOm/Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal (www.mom.gr), was co-funded by the MAVA Foundation and it is a part of the wider project Monk seal conservation efforts in the Eastern Mediterranean. The continuous, targeted and scientifically structured efforts for the conservation of the species, both in Greece and in other Mediterranean countries, have resulted in the reclassification of the Mediterranean Monk Seal, in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, replacing its previous status from “Endangered” to “Vulnerable”.
