Thalassa Foundation, proves for yet another time its sensitization regarding the rare and endangered species of the Mediterranean Monk Seal. Thus, with MOm as an implementer, Thalassa Foundation funds a large part of a new project with an important target set for 2017-2019: The full mapping of all the important reproduction sites of the Mediterranean monk seal in Greece. In a country with a total coastline of 16000 kilometers, such a mission might seem impossible! However, the vast experience of MOm’s researchers guarantees its success. In 2017, the mapping of Kythira, Antikythira and the whole of Peloponesse was completed (an area that had never been explored in the past) and new important reproduction sites have been discovered already. In 2018, the research team is planning to set sail for Crete. Therefore, we hope that by the end of 2019 we will have, for the first time, a complete map of the species’ reproduction in the country and, as a result, a more efficient plan for its future protection.
