Alonissos has one of the largest marine parks in Europe, which hosts a large variety of rare and endangered species i.e. monk seals, dolphins and other cetaceans. The heart of the Marine Park, Piperi island, is designated as a strictly protected area in a radius of 3nm and one of the most important nature reserves of the Mediterranean monk seal, with almost 1/4 of the world’s total population, found in the area.
The National Marine Park of Alonissos, Northern Sporades (N.M.P.A.N.S.) has a significant environmental and economic impact on the local community, since fishing activities constitute an important source of income. Unfortunately, the Park’s rich fish capacity has rendered it an area with an increasing number of violations of the no-take zone, especially the last 1 ½ years during which patrols have not been possible due to lack of adequate public funding.
In order to protect the Park’s rich biodiversity Thalassa Foundation has conceded motorboat “Kimolos” to the official Management Body of the N.M.P.A.N.S. The boat will patrol the marine protected area so that illegal fishing is prevented and will also contribute to scientific research and monitoring of local fish stocks.
